Case study and testimonial for Wishlist Media’s work for the Lord’s Taverners UK tour to South Africa in March 2020.
The Lord’s Taverners are a UK-based charity organisation that is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year. As part of the celebrations, they opted to visit South Africa to help raise funds for their local chapter, which included raising awareness for Table Cricket, an adapted version of the game designed to mentally and physically disabled children the chance to participate in team sports.
There were two major challenges facing the Taverners: little to no knowledge of the local media landscape, and a short turnaround time of less than a month. Without the proper media coverage, the main purpose of their trip - to raise awareness and the profile of Table Cricket - would fall flat.
We reached out to the major sporting publications in the country and on the continent to cover the trip, and arranged all photographers and videographers for the duration of the week-long tour. We also ran PR at all the events, which included two cricket matches, a Table Cricket demonstration on Table Mountain, kit handover in a local township, and a coaching clinic.
The Lord’s Taverners’ tour was covered extensively by some of the biggest publications, including Sport24, ESPN, Cricket World, Independent, Reuters and CricBuzz. As a result, Table Cricket and the kit handover to unprivileged communities featured prominently in local media, and by the end of the tour, more than 20 new tables (at R10 000 each) had been sourced for various special needs schools around the Western Cape.
